Welcome!
Sun Valley Farm is a family run farm on 65 rolling
acres located in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin. Our goal is to produce outstanding Icelandic sheep breeding stock with wonderful
fleece and meat qualities, gorgeous natural colored rovings for handspinners, and one-of-a-kind hand-dyed commercial yarns.
We were first attracted to Icelandic sheep because of their beautiful and colorful fleeces. The
more research we did and the more we learned about this ancient breed, such as their ease of lambing, the ability to attain
market weight by being raised on pasture and hay alone and not needing tail docking, the more we knew we just had to
raise this breed in particular. Our animals are raised out on our pastures and are also fed hay which we bale ourselves.
Of course they do like the occasional treat of corn or oats, which helps us move them from pasture to pasture when necessary.
Icelandic sheep have an incredible range of colors to the Icelandic fleece, which is a double-coated fleece, and we
offer for sale natural colored rovings that have been processed by us. The rovings spin like a dream, and the many colors
available give the handspinner endless options for creating the yarns of their dreams!
The most common coloros are black,
white and brown (moorit). The blacks range from the darkest black to greys and silvers. The brown (moorit) range
from tan to milk chocolate to a coppery color to the darkest chocolate you can imagine.
The sheep also have beautiful
patterns in their coloring. Mouflon patterning can be black or moorit on the head, neck and back of the sheep, with
a creamy tan from the chin, belly to the legs. Spots are fun, as they appear anywhere and everywhere on the sheep.
Badgerface is a beautiful pattern. The sheep has a generally overall tan or oatmeal head and body, with black or moorit
markings on the face and legs.
With all of the different patterns and colors available in a single breed, it's
quite the sight to gaze off the porch at the different animals and colors scattered across the pasture, contentedly gazing
away.
